เพิ่งไปได้หนังสือ A New Kind of Science ราคาสิบปอนด์มาจาก Blackwell's
เป็นเรื่องเกี่ยวกะ cellular automata

คือไม่ได้ตั้งใจซื้อหรอก เพราะว่ามีอยู่แล้วที่เมืองไทย แต่เห็นมันลดราคาลงมาเหลือแค่สิบปอนด์ (จาก 40!)
เลยคิดในใจ เออ เอาก็เอาวะ แล้วเดี๋ยวค่อยบอกน้องชายให้เอาเล่มที่บ้านไปให้ห้องสมุด
(ห้องสมุดที่สถาบันมีแล้ว คิดว่าเอาไปให้ห้องสมุดศูนย์รังสิตดีกว่า)

พอได้มา ก็เลยกดๆ เข้าไปดูเวบของหนังสือเค้าหน่อย ก็เลยได้รู้ว่า Stephen Wolfram คนเขียนหนังสือเล่มนี้เนี่ย ก็เป็นศิษย์เก่า Caltech อีกแล้ว .. เข้ากะเรื่องที่เขียนในบล็อกวันก่อนเลย

สรุปได้ความว่า ศิษย์เก่า CalTech ที่เราหนีไม่พ้น คงจะมีสามคน

รายแรกนี่เป็นเพื่อนกับหนึ่ง (หนึ่งนี่คือนักเรียนที่นี่ ทำงานร้านเดียวกัน)
ชื่อ "น้ำต้น" ชื่อเท่เนอะ มาเที่ยวอังกฤษ แล้วก็ขึ้นมาหาหนึ่งที่สก็อต
หนึ่งไปรับน้ำต้นจากสถานีรถไฟประมาณสองทุ่ม พามากินข้าว
แล้วพาน้ำต้นไปบ้าน ก่อนจะกลับมาทำงานต่อ
ทั้งสองคนเรียนด้านชีววิทยาเหมือนกัน
ตัวน้ำต้นนี่เรียนอยู่ CalTech .. ได้ยินแล้วอึ้ง เก่งโคตร

CalTech เป็นมหาลัยที่ไม่ใหญ่
ข้อมูลจากวิกิพีเดีย บอกว่ามีนักศึกษาปริญญาตรีแค่ประมาณ 900 คน และระดับบัณฑิตศึกษาอีกประมาณ 1,000 คน
คือพูดได้ว่า เล็กว่าคณะบางคณะในมหาลัยไทยซะอีก

แต่ที่นี่ คือ science/engineering school ที่พูดได้ว่า เข้ายากที่สุดในสหรัฐ
แถมถ้านับสัดส่วนรางวัลโนเบล ฯลฯ ต่อหัว ในสายวิทยาศา่สตร์ ก็ไม่แน่ว่าที่นี่อาจจะเป็นที่หนึ่ง

คุยไปคุยมา พี่เค้าถามว่าเราเป็นนักเรียนรึเปล่า เรียนอะไร
เราก็ว่าใช่ เรียน informatics ทำด้านคอม+ภาษา
พี่เค้าก็ว่า เอ้าเหรอ พี่เค้าก็ทำเกี่ยวกะด้านภาษาศาสตร์ ใช้พวก corpus ไรงี้เหมือนกัน อยู่ที่ลีดส์ (Leeds)
ก็เลยคุยไปถึงเรื่อง อ.สุดาพร กะ อ.วิโรจน์ ที่จุฬา
เพราะว่าดูเหมือนที่นั่นจะทำเรื่องคลังภาษามานานกว่าที่อื่นในเมืองไทย
(ตอนก่อนจะมาต่อที่นี่ ก็ไปปรึกษา อ.สุดาพร หลายทีอยู่เหมือนกัน ขอขอบคุณมาตรงนี้ด้วยครับ)
แล้วเราก็พูดถึงว่า อ.อัศนีย์ ที่เกษตร ก็ทำอยู่นะ เท่าที่ดูจากเนต แต่ไม่มีรายละเอียด
แล้วพี่เค้าก็บอกว่า อ.ธนารักษ์ ที่ SIIT ก็ทำเหมือนกัน
เราก็ อ้าว รู้จัก อ.ปิง ด้วยเหรอ งงเลย คือไม่คิดว่าจะมีคนต่างสายรู้จักน่ะ
เพราะว่ายังค่อนข้างใหม่อยู่ (แลบตั้งมาได้ประมาณสองปีเองมั้ง)
ก็เลยบอกพี่เค้าไปอีกว่า TCL ที่ตอนนี้ อ.วิรัช อยู่ ก็กำลังทำพวก lexicon อะไรพวกนี้อยู่เหมือนกัน เท่าที่ดูจากงานที่ตีพิมพ์เมื่อต้นปี
(มีลูกศิษย์ อ.ชุลีรัตน์ ไปอยู่ด้วยคนนึง คนที่ทำ automatic summarisation)

เราก็แบบ โห โชคดีจัง ทำงานอยู่ในร้านเฉยๆ
ก็มีคนที่ทำเรื่องเดียวกันมาให้คุย
เลยรีบให้อีเมลพี่เค้าไป เผื่อจะไปขอคำปรึกษา เหอะๆ :P

คิดๆ ดู เอาไว้เดี๋ยวทำ รายชื่อคนที่ทำงานด้านนี้ไว้ดีกว่า

Eclipse 3.0 จะออกแล้ว
quick note: ภายในวันที่ 30 นี้ Eclipse เป็น Java IDE ที่เป็นที่นิยมมาก เริ่มพัฒนาโดย IBM ตอนนี้เป็นโอเพนซอร์ส มีปลั๊กอินดีๆ เพียบ ช่วยให้งานพัฒนาง่ายขึ้น นอกจาก Java แล้ว ก็ยังใช้งานกับภาษาอื่นๆ ได้ด้วย (ตามปลั๊กอิน) -- 'คู่แข่ง' ของ Eclipse ก็คงจะเป็น NetBeans ซึ่งเป็นโครงการโอเพนซอร์สเหมือนกัน จาก Sun -- Eclipse จะเป็นที่นิยมกว่า เนื่องจากมันเร็ว (ใช้ native code/widget หลายๆ ส่วน). แต่ถ้าพูดถึงการดีบัก หรือการออกแบบ GUI แล้ว NetBeans ดีกว่า (ได้รางวัลมาแล้วหลายรางวัล)

quick note:โมเดลการพัฒนาดีไวซ์ไดรเวอร์ใหม่ จากไมโครซอฟต์ ยังไม่ได้อ่านรายละเอียด แต่เท่าที่ดูคร่าวๆ หลักๆ น่าจะเป็นการแยก kernel mode, user mode และส่วนอื่นๆ ออกจากกันอย่างชัดเจน เพื่อให้การพัฒนาแต่ละส่วนไม่กระทบกัน -- ซึ่งจะลดงานทดสอบลงไปได้เยอะ

ถ้าพูดถึงคอนเซปต์โดยรวมแล้ว ในระดับที่สูงขึ้นไปอีก ก็อาจจะออกทำนอง SNAP ของ SciTech ได้ อันนั้นคือ แยกซอฟต์แวร์ส่วนที่ติดต่อกับระบบปฏิบัติการ ออกจากส่วนที่ติดต่อกับฮาร์ดแวร์

ถ้าทำทั้งหมดนี้ ก็คือเราจะได้ layer (ชั้น) ต่างๆ ออกมาเพียบเลย โดยแต่ละ layer ก็จะมี interface ที่ชัดเจน สำหรับการคุยกับอีก layer
- ข้อดีก็คือ จะทำให้การพัฒนาไดรเวอร์เร็วขึ้น คุณภาพดีขึ้น (คือทดสอบได้ครอบคลุมขึ้น เนื่องจากมีจำนวนคู่ที่จะต้องทดสอบน้อยลง -- เช่น 4 ฮาร์ดแวร์ (hw), 3 ระบบปฏิบัติการ (os) ถ้าตามโมเดล hw-driver-os ก็ต้องการ ไดรเวอร์ 12 ตัว (4x3) ก็ต้องทดสอบทั้ง 12 ตัว. แต่ถ้าเป็น hw-driverHW-driverOS-os ก็จะต้องการแค่ 7 ตัว (4+3) -- ไปดูรูปได้ที่เวบของ SciTech -- แบบนี้ก็จะลดงานเขียน, งานทดสอบลงไป)
- ข้อเสียที่อาจจะเป็นไปได้ ก็คือ มันจะทำให้มี overhead เพิ่มขึ้นรึเปล่า?

คำว่า overhead มักจะมาคู่กับคำว่า layer
อย่างคนที่บอกว่า Java ช้า บางคนว่า เพราะว่า Java มัน 'overengineered'
คือออกแบบให้ modular มากเกินไป จนมีไม่รู้กี่ layer/interface
นอกจากจะทำให้รันช้าแล้ว ยังทำให้นักพัฒนาปวดหัว เพราะต้องมาเรียนรู้ interface ต่างๆ พวกนี้
ซึ่งพอยิ่งเยอะ ก็ยิ่งทำให้เรียนรู้ได้ไม่หมด ไม่ชำนาญ โค้ดที่ออกมาก็เลยห่วยๆ ยิ่งทำให้โปรแกรมช้าไปอีก

แต่จริงมันไม่น่าเกี่ยวกันมากนัก เพราะ layer/interface ต่างๆ เป็นแค่ข้อกำหนด ไม่ใช่ตัว implementation
ถ้ามีอะไรช้า ก็คือพัฒนาไม่ดีเอง
แต่ก็เป็นไปได้ที่ layer/interface ออกแบบมาห่วยมากๆ จนกระทั่งไม่สามารถ implement ให้ดีได้ .. จบกัน -_-"

2 days ago: connection failed with debian.
yesterday: success with cobind, but not satisfied with its yum and nautilus 2.4.
yesterday: gnoppix lightweight is nice, but xfce's xffm is not.
(whole) last night: debian. switching around gnome and xfce for several times. and good bye to xfce in the end, its apps just doesn't matched my needs.
now: a gnome desktop on debian gnu/linux.

soon: i wish i will restart my machine very soon, to log in to my beautiful windows xp :P

พยายามจะลง Gentoo มาชาติเศษๆ แล้ว แต่ไม่สำเร็จซักที คือสามารถลงส่วนพื้นฐานทุกอย่างได้หมดแล้ว บูตได้แล้ว ติดอยู่แค่ emerge ซอฟต์แวร์ที่เหลือไม่ได้ เนื่องจากมันมองไม่เห็นอินเตอร์เนต ตัวการ์ดเนตเวิร์กนั้น มันก็มองเห็นแล้ว (ถ้า make kernel แบบธรรมดามองไม่เห็น ต้องใช้ genkernal ทำให้ แล้วเรียก initrd ให้ไป probe หาฮาร์ดแวร์ให้อัตโนมัติถึงจะเจอ แต่ก็คือมองเห็นเนตเวิร์กแล้วล่ะ) ปัญหาที่พบคือ ถ้าเกิดว่าเซต proxy ไว้ มันก็จะฟ้องว่า nameserver ไม่รู้จักชื่อ proxy นี้ แล้วก็ทำอะไรต่อไม่ได้ แต่ถ้าเกิดไม่เซต proxy ตัว wget (ที่ emerge เรียกใช้) ก็จะมองเห็นเครื่องข้างนอก คือ resolve ชื่อเครื่องข้างนอกได้ เริ่มทำการติดต่อได้ แต่ก็หยุดอยู่แค่นั้น เพราะว่าทุก connection ต้องทำผ่าน proxy สรุปว่า จะเซตก็ไม่ได้ จะไม่เซตก็ไม่ได้ ไม่ได้เป็นแค่ตัว wget แต่ links2 ก็เป็น (ตั้งค่า proxy ต่างหาก ไม่ได้เอาจาก environment) ลองอยู่หลายรอบ จนคิดว่า เออ ไม่เอาละ ไปลงตัวอื่นก็ได้ ก็ไปลองดูๆ Debian โหลดโปรแกรมดาวน์โหลดไฟล์ติดตั้งของ Debian มา (jigdo) อันนี้รันใน Windows ก็เซต proxy เหมือนกัน (เอาค่ามาจากไฟล์ JavaScript ที่เวบเบราเซอร์ใช้สำหรับ automatic proxy configuration) คือค่าเดียวกันนี้ ถ้าเอาไปเซต proxy ในเวบเบราเซอร์ แบบ manual ก็คือใช้ได้ แต่พอเอามาใช้กับโปรแกรม jigdo (ใช้ wget เหมือนกัน) ปัญหาที่พบก็เหมือนที่เจอใน linux (gentoo) เลย คือมันบอกว่าไม่รู้จัก proxy นี้ แล้วพอเอา proxy ออก มันก็ connect ไม่ได้ บ้าจริง ทำอะไรไม่ได้ซักอย่าง ติด proxy หมด :( ใครรู้วิธีอะไรดีๆ ช่วยบอกหน่อย ขอบคุณล่วงหน้าหลายๆ

In the search for Dr. Siriporn Thipkong

Last week, a guy from University of Queensland, Mr. Peter Galbraith, sent me an email asking about contact address of one prof in Thailand.

The only link that Mr. Peter has about 'him' (in his own word, but actually she is 'her') is that (s)he is working for the Mathematics Association of Thailand.

For some reason (don't ask me), his internet search found that string in my CV. So, as I've told you earlier, he mailed me .. with a little hope, that I may know her.

Well, I don't know her.
But it seems that this thing is really important for him.
So I try to search the internet with her name "Siriporn Thipkong".

Gotcha. Google do it best in its job. I got a link to Department of Education, Faculty of Education, Kasetsart University (in Thailand). So it turns out that she no longer working for the math assoc.

After few clicks, I found her contact info, including email address.
So I replied him with all the info I've found.
(Good boy? :P Well, I'm not really that kind of good person. I just have 'too much' time .. do me a favor, don't tell my supervisor about this .. ok? -- great.)

Anyway, may be the info on the web is not that update as I was thought. After he tried to email her with the email address I gave, it bounced back. Ka-ching.

Don't know where to go. But still feel that he should have something really important. My last option is internet discussion board, just ask the people outthere. Hoping someone will read it and reply.


And just ten minutes before this, there is a reply.

revised lots of translations last night + added new translations.
it seems like the GSI file I playing with now is a one extracted from 1.1.2 source.
so it didn't well intregrated with the 1.1.1 source in my disk,
some translationed strings cannot find their way in the source code.

have to go to school for cvsing, can't do it from here.
may be next week, after presentation.

ชื่อคริส เป็นนักเรียนทุน พสวท. จบฟิสิกส์ มหิดล ไปต่อ Imperial College London ตอนนี้ทำเอกอยู่ที่ นานยาง สิงคโปร์ (เป็นมหาลัยที่เขียวมากๆ ชอบ) ด้าน Photonics (คืออะไรฟะ? น่าจะเกี่ยวกะแสงอะไรซักอย่าง) จะจบแล้ว : ข้อมูลจาก CV
